Day options are provided by Autism Society of North Carolina through a small business model in New Bern (Crabpots, Etc.) and day programs in Raleigh (Creative Living) and Greensboro (Autism Center for Life Enrichment).
Crabpots, Etc. employs adults with ASD to perform various tasks in the assembly of crab traps used by the commercial and recreational crabbers. Employees are paid above minimum wage. Crabpots, Etc. opened in 1998.
The Creative Living program was established in 1997 in response to parent requests that there be alternative day placements to the traditional sheltered workshop model. The mission of the program is to equip men and women with autism with the needed skills to achieve success in the community. Participants in the program attend the program five days a week. Daily activities include music, art, and recreation programming, prevocational training, supported employment and community involvement.
The Autism Center for Life Enrichment (ACLE) is a day program located in Greensboro. Opened in 2000, ACLE builds on the model developed at Creative Living. The program offers its participants instruction in all areas of daily living, art lessons, sensory stimulation experiences, relaxation techniques, evening social group for adults, and other community based opportunities.
The Learning Center is an after school program operated by the Autism Society of North Carolina in Cumberland County.
Blue Ridge Bags and More is a small business in Asheville where participants produce original works of art as well as manufacture cloth shopping bags, note cards, and other items. Additionally, the business provides vocational opportunities by selling TEACCH Home Teaching kits over the Internet and shipping those items worldwide.
The programs described above currently do not have any openings for new participants. The Autism Society of North Carolina maintains a list of families interested in pursuing day options in their communities.
