We have six Mini-Camp Weekends throughout the year, usually on the third weekend in September, October and November, and the first weekend in February, March and April. (Please check the Mini-Camp page for dates.) For new staff members, we look for a commitment of working at least three weekends within one school year.
All of our Counselors, who are provided with room and board at camp during the weekend, must be age 18 and older, with the average age of our Counselors being 20. Most of our staff are college students or work in the school system, although neither is a requirement for employment. All staff must have two complete references, an interview, and a background check before being hired.
Staff are required to arrive at 4 p.m. Friday evening to start the weekend. The campers leave on Sunday at 12 noon, and you will be finished working very soon after. Staff members work until about 8:30 each night and start at 8:30 each morning.
During your first training weekend, you will be paid $75 for the weekend. When you are working directly as a Counselor, you will be paid $150 for the weekend.
It is very important to us at Camp Royall that our staff are well-trained and receive proper support. All new staff members attend a training weekend before working directly as a Counselor. During this training weekend, you will do some training, shadow, observe and have lots of opportunities to ask questions. You will learn about autism and strategies for working with the individuals we serve, specifically in the camp environment.
Low counselor-to-camper ratios are crucial to the success of Camp Royall. Our ratios are typically 1:1 or 1:2. The primary responsibilities of our Counselors include encouraging campers through the scheduled activities and assisting and supporting in communication, social interaction, and self-care.
