Our hearts go out to North Carolinians suffering in the wake of Hurricane Helene. We are here for you and your loved ones. Please find some resources we have gathered for you below. If you need further help, please call us at 800-442-2762.

Online resources from ASNC

•  Social narratives, including “I Can’t Go Home,” “Storm Safety at Home,” and “Evacuating for a Storm.”

Immediate disaster assistance

Disaster Distress Helpline 1-800-5990 for crisis support.

• Dial 211 for assistance with food, clothing, diapers, and other toiletries. It may be busy, so keep trying.

FEMA Disaster Assistance – 800-621-3362 (7 a.m. – 11 p.m.).

•  Go to the NC Department of Health and Human Services Hurricane Recovery Resources webpage for information about response efforts, disaster recovery, resources to help people with disabilities, and more.

•  Go to the NC Department of Public Safety website for a roundup of resources and information on government announcements, shelters, disaster clean up requests, search and rescue, and more.

•  For travel information, see the NC Department of Transportation’s updates. Please remember that GPS and apps may not always be updated for road closings.

•  You can also check your local county’s response on this webpage.

•  Area faith and community organizations also can be a good resource.

•  For urgent behavioral health and IDD needs, call your LME/MCO crisis hotline.

Other resources

•  Learn more about your rights, including for tenants, and assistance on the Legal Aid of North Carolina webpage.

•  The SAMHSA Disaster App provides access to critical, disaster-related behavioral health resources from your phone. SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) also has a Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990 that is available year-round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The national hotline is dedicated to providing immediate crisis counseling for people who are experiencing emotional distress related to natural or human-caused disasters.

•  Workers who become unemployed because of Hurricane Helene may be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Applications can be filed on the Division of Employment Security website.

Food and Nutrition Services

•  Current Food and Nutrition Services households that have a food loss may request replacement benefits through their county DSS.
