Hurricane Resources

Our hearts go out to North Carolinians who are suffering because of Hurricane Florence. We are here for you and your loved ones. We have gathered some resources for you below, but if you need further help, please call 800-442-2762.

Online resources from ASNC:

Immediate disaster assistance:

  • Families concerned about sheltering those with autism, or in need of calming rooms, can contact a Red Cross disability adviser at 512-975-1690 for help identifying a shelter near you that could provide support.
  • Go to the NC Department of Public Safety website for a roundup of resources and information on government announcements, traffic, shelters, flooding, and more. You also can use the ReadyNC app on your phone for easy access.
  • You can also check your local countyā€™s response on this webpage.
  • For travel information, see the NC Department of Transportationā€™s updates. Please remember that GPS and apps may not always be updated for road closings.
  • D-SNAP (Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) through local county DSS offices will cover food lost due to disasters. The deadline in 28 counties is Saturday, Oct. 6. In Greene County, it is Oct. 11.
  • Dial 211Ā for assistance with food, clothing, diapers, and other toiletries. It may be busy, so keep trying. You may also contact 211 assistance by texting FlorenceĀ to 898211
  • Area faith and community organizations also can be a good resource.
  • For urgent behavioral health and IDD needs, call your LME/MCO crisis hotline.
  • NC Department of Health and Human Services Disaster Distress Hotline: 800-985-5990

FEMA disaster benefits:

  • The following counties are eligible for FEMA assistance: Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Duplin, Harnett, Hoke, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lee, Lenoir, Moore, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Pitt, Richmond, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland, Wayne, and Wilson counties. More may be added.
  • You can register for assistance by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov or calling 800-621-3362 (800-462-7585 TTY users). (Multilingual operators are available.) The toll-free numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
  • FEMA Transitional Sheltering Assistance (hotel vouchers) will be available starting this week. To receive a voucher, you must be registered with FEMA for Disaster Benefits (above), provide identification, and be displaced because of Hurricane Florence. Vouchers cover room and tax only. Not all hotels will accept FEMA vouchers; check the list.

For Medicaid beneficiaries:

NC Medicaid has made temporary policy and procedure changes to make it faster and easier to receive Medicaid and NC Health Choice care and services during the State of Emergency declared by Gov. Cooper. DHHS and NC Medicaid are regularly evaluating decisions and temporary provisions may be added or modified as needed. Visit their webpage for current information.

Information from other medical groups:

If you receive Food and Nutrition Services (FNS):

  • If you are enrolled in the Food and Nutrition Services program, you can use your benefits to buy hot food after Hurricane Florence.
  • Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards can be used at any authorized retailer, even if you are out-of-state.
  • Current Food and Nutrition Services households that have a food loss may request replacement benefits through their county DSS.
  • Lost or damaged EBT cards can be replaced by calling the EBT Call Center at 1-888-622-7328.

Other assistance:

  • Workers who become unemployed because of Hurricane Florence may be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Applications can be filed on the Division of Employment Security website or by calling 866-795-8877. (Note: The online claims application will be unavailable from Sept. 24 to 28 because of a system upgrade.)
  • The SAMHSA Disaster App provides access to critical, disaster-related behavioral health resources from your phone. SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) also has a Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990 that is available year-round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The national hotline is dedicated to providing immediate crisis counseling for people who are experiencing emotional distress related to natural or human-caused disasters.
  • Learn more about your rights, including for tenants, and assistance from Legal Aid of NC.
  • Crisis Cleanup helps organizations collaborate as they provide disaster relief. People who need help may call 800-451-1954. People or groups who would like to provide help can go to the website to sign up.
  • We encourage all residents to follow their local governmentsā€™ websites, Twitter, Facebook, and Nextdoor accounts. Many community groups and businesses are offering assistance that will be posted on social media.
