URGENT ACTION NEEDED: Protect Medicaid for People with Autism in North Carolina

Thank you for your continued advocacy. It’s time for another round of calls and outreach — the Senate is expected to vote as early as Friday (June 27) on their version of the Reconciliation Package, with the House likely to take it up next week.

The Senate’s version of the bill includes:

  • Over $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid
  • Stricter eligibility checks that increase administrative burden
  • New restrictions on provider taxes that could severely affect funding for services in states like North Carolina

These cuts would significantly harm Medicaid coverage for all, potentially limiting optional services under Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) in North Carolina. The Congressional Budget Office found that the bill would result in over 7.8 million individuals losing Medicaid coverage. Since over 1.6 million autistic individuals rely on Medicaid nationwide, we must ensure that our population is protected.

We are also deeply concerned about the unintended consequences of increased eligibility verification. These changes could cause individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) to lose coverage due to unnecessary red tape, not changes in their medical or financial needs.

Finally, these Medicaid cuts and provider tax changes (which impact hospital funding in North Carolina) would make it even more difficult for our state to:

  • Maintain current service levels
  • Expand access to necessary care for individuals with ASD and I/DD

A call to action

Please call and email your Senators and Representatives TODAY and share your story. Let them know how vital Medicaid is to you, your family, or your community. Cuts to Medicaid will have devastating consequences for people with ASD/IDD in North Carolina.Ā Tell them how important it is to protect HCBS services.

Let’s keep the pressure on—lives and services are at stake.

Act now! Here’s what to say:

  • I am a constituent from [Your NC city, zip code].
  • I am a person with autism / a family member / a professional in the autism field.
  • Medicaid is a lifeline for people on the autism spectrum.
  • [If applicable] My family depends on Medicaid for services/supports.
  • Do not cut or cap Medicaid funding that affects individuals with disabilities. NC already has a 10+ year waiting list for waiver services.
  • Cuts will harm people who rely on Medicaid and make it harder for NC to provide care.
