Itā€™s the first camp of its kind in eastern North Carolina that works specifically with kids on the autism spectrum.

Programs are now available for about 25 participants, which lasts for six weeks. The campers are able to attend the activities for free thanks to grants.

The Autism Society of North Carolina said theyā€™re proud to help organize this pioneer program.

ā€œThere are so many unmet needs for folks with autism,ā€ said Sara Gage, Autism Society of North Carolina. ā€œSo to be able to open this program is a Godsend. To the families in this area, to provide an opportunity for families that have received little to no really no services ever in the past.ā€

The day camp will wrap up in September.

The Autism Society of North Carolina is working to start an after school program that will take over once the day camp is completed.
